Andy’s Asparagus Adventure

Andy is an Australian–Vietnamese boy living in Macgregor, Canberra, ACT. He enjoys spending time in the garden with his dad, learning about plants, composting, and organic gardening.

One day, Andy unexpectedly joined his dad on a trip to PEGASUS, a community organisation that supports people with disabilities and operates an equestrian centre. They were there to collect horse manure for making compost. To his dad’s surprise, Andy was fascinated by the task and showed no concern about getting dirty. He eagerly picked up the horse manure, broke it apart, and helped shovel it into the trailer.

Back at home, Andy continued helping his dad transport the manure to their composting area. While exploring the garden, he noticed many small seedlings emerging from the soil beneath the jujube trees.

“Dad, what are these plants?” Andy asked excitedly.

His dad took a closer look and was delighted to discover that they were asparagus seedlings. A few weeks earlier, Andy had helped sow asparagus seeds in the garden, and now they had successfully germinated.

Seeing the tiny plants growing sparked an exciting idea. Andy and his dad began discussing a small family enterprise focused on organic asparagus production. Their vision includes collecting organic asparagus seeds, propagating seedlings, designing asparagus gardens, and supplying asparagus plants to home gardeners and small-scale growers.

More importantly, they want their business to create a positive social impact. Andy and his dad have committed to donating 30% of plant sales to support English language training for rural children in Vietnam through Mekong Organics’ educational initiatives.

For Andy, growing asparagus is more than gardening. It is about learning, caring for the environment, developing entrepreneurial skills, and helping other children gain access to educational opportunities. From a handful of seeds and a load of horse manure, a small idea has started to grow into something much bigger.
