Mekong Organics English for Rural Kids in Vietnam

Mekong Organics – English for Rural Kids in Vietnam

Founded by Dr. Nguyen Van Kien, Director of Mekong Organics

Mission Statement – Mekong Organics English for Rural Kids

Our mission is to support a future where every child in rural Southeast Asia, regardless of background, has the confidence and ability to communicate in English. We aim to enable access to further education, leadership roles, and meaningful participation in the global community. Through direct engagement with native Australian speakers and mentorship from Australian alumni, we equip children from farming families with essential language skills and global perspectives. Our mission is to break cycles of disadvantage—one English lesson at a time.

Vision Statement – Mekong Organics English for Rural Kids

Creating global opportunities from rural roots! We envision a future where every rural child in Southeast Asia has the tools to access education, leadership, and meaningful roles in a globalized world. Mekong Organics English aims to nurture a new generation of youth who are empowered, connected, and capable of contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable future.

Background

Mekong Organics supports smallholder farmers and small businesses in sustainably growing and trading organic food in Southeast Asia. To build long-term capacity for farm families, we launched Mekong Organics English to teach children in rural areas to speak English with native Australian speakers, under the mentorship of Australian alumni awarded Australia Awards scholarships.

This initiative began in the rural Mekong Delta, Vietnam—where Dr. Nguyen Van Kien grew up in a rice-farming family in Thuan Hung Commune, My Tu District, Soc Trang Province. Mekong Organics is an Australian-based social enterprise headquartered in Canberra. Dr. Kien received an Australian Development Scholarship for his postgraduate studies in Environmental Management and Development (ANU, 2005–06) and an Australian Leadership Award for his PhD in Sociology (ANU, 2008–12). He believes English was the gateway to these opportunities.

Growing up, Kien had no access to English. He rowed a wooden boat to My Huong Primary and High School with his peers. He began learning English at university in 1996, alongside urban students. Recognising the gap, he piloted the English program in his hometown (Thien Nhon Hamlet), starting with three scholarships and a tablet for one child to learn English with mentorship and weekly speaking practice with Australian mentor Mr. Anton Pavlinovic. In 2022, he met Kate Jackson and Philip Piper in Mallacoota, Victoria Australia. From this seed, the program expanded to 60 disadvantaged children by August 10, 2022.
